Difficult movements
Describe positions and movements that change pain, without forcing them to test.
TAGMED CLINIC · MONTREAL
The small joints may contribute.
Clarify the factors in your pain.
In Mont-Royal, prepare for a facet joint syndrome consultation with difficult movements, local pain and any radiating pain.

A care journey that begins with you.
Individualized assessment Options explained Functional goals01 / UNDERSTAND
Facets are the small joints at the back of the vertebrae. The term facet joint syndrome suggests pain possibly related to these structures; osteoarthritis on imaging is not enough to confirm their role.
Describe positions and movements that change pain, without forcing them to test.
Clarify whether the discomfort stays in the back or neck or extends to a nearby region.
Pain farther down a limb, numbness or weakness may require another interpretation.
Facet joint syndrome and facet osteoarthritis are not equivalent in every situation: the former suggests a pain origin, while the latter describes joint changes.
YOUR CONSULTATION IN MONTREAL
Before your Mont-Royal consultation, describe what changes during a prolonged period of standing or sitting and during usual rotations. Follow-up can use a concrete task rather than the report’s joint appearance alone.

02 / EXPLORE THE OPTIONS
The choice of care begins with your history, current signs and symptoms, and goals. A condition mentioned in a report does not dictate a treatment method.
Describe the positions and movements that change the pain, without pushing yourself to test them. Existing examination results and previous care add to the discussion.
Non-surgical spinal decompression, adapted exercise, targeted osteopathic care or medical referral: relevant options are explained according to your situation and the limitations of each.
Track a limited activity and tolerance for it, then reconsider other possible factors if progress is unsatisfactory.
Suitability for decompression must be determined on a case-by-case basis. Facet joint syndrome is not automatically a disc-related indication; other approaches and the need for medical advice must be discussed. Spinal decompression uses motorized traction; results vary and no individual benefit can be guaranteed. NICE advises against traction for low back pain with or without sciatica. This recommendation, the uncertainties and the alternatives must be explained. Read the NICE guidelines.

No. Joint changes must be interpreted alongside symptoms and examination. Several factors may contribute at the same time.
Referred pain may extend to a nearby region. Sciatica follows a nerve-related pattern; the examination looks in particular for sensory and motor signs to guide the discussion.
Suitability for non-surgical spinal decompression must be determined case by case. Facet joint syndrome is not an automatic indication for disc treatment; other approaches and the need for medical advice must be discussed.
The name of a condition cannot determine the number of sessions. Goals, tolerance and progress should guide the development and reassessment of the plan. Also ask when a change in approach would be needed.
Osteopathy receipts may be issued. Check your policy conditions and whether your insurer recognizes the practitioner. Services are not covered by RAMQ.
